BEING A WOMAN
IN THE SUBURBS

FRANCE | 2024

This documentary combines the stories of eight women working for the city of Bobigny: post office manager, social worker at the police station, receptionist, social mediator, maintenance worker, public writer, deputy director general of city hall services.

Aged between 30 and 50, and almost all working in contact with users, they talk about the particular situations they themselves have experienced as women or that they have observed in this town in the 93 region. They talk about women’s place in the public space, their feeling of insecurity in the streets after dark, the male stranglehold on cafés where you feel like an intruder, the inappropriate looks and remarks, the discredit they have to face at work, the difficulty of reconciling maternity and professional life, especially when bringing up children alone.

In the face of domestic violence, inequality and the precariousness that affects them most, these women build a shield of mutual support: welcoming the words of some, encouraging the autonomy of others, standing in the way of a husband’s authoritarianism, doing each other favors, sticking together. This chorus of voices gives voice to female solidarity and fighting spirit. Raising our voices, speaking together to make ourselves heard.
